The Story
Where TinyALE came from
TinyALE grew out of a real need. We analyzed the reporting workflow at Nova High School, and built a system to capture Nova's pedagogy and reporting, and to assure compliance with ALE reporting standards. Nova launched the system, then called TinySIS, for the 2006 school year. Our partnership with Nova over all these years has yielded a flexible, intuitive web application that meets staff and student needs, while providing needed documentation during compliance audits.
Nova is a project-based alternative high school in the Seattle School District. It operates under Washington State's Alternative Learning Experience (ALE) framework, which requires careful monthly documentation of each student's learning contracts and full-tie equivalent progress. That documentation is what drives school funding—and what TinyALE was built to automate.
Nineteen consecutive school years later, the system is still running at Nova—and now expanding to serve other communities that need the same kind of focused, practical tool.
